Hello everyone,

I am looking for friends who are interested in Economics, we can discuss the latest news of the world and the trend of their economy.

I am a 3rd year economic major student, I found that political economy is quite interesting. From the latest news, we can predict and foresee the economical trends of some countries. However, I don't have many friends who like to discuss this kind of issue with me, I only discuss with my boyfriend, but he is engineering student.

Some theories that learnt could be applied in our real life, and it has made Economics less boring but more fun =D

I am quite interested in China economy, anyone wants to share something from he/her point of view?

Besides, I welcome you to share microeconomics information. or anyone who has confusion about economics I will try my best to clear your doubts =D

this is rather important for retrieving one country's economy when it suffers an economy downturn or business cycle

sometime, a country adopts both Fiscal Policy and Monetary Policy, which named Mixed Policy
its objective is to expand the economy while maintaining their exchange rate

I will introduce the Fiscal Policy, Monetary Policy and Mixed Policy later =D

Fiscal Policy:

2 tools to stimulate or slow down the economy: taxes and government expenditure

when the economy is overheating, means that exchange rate will appreciate, government will increase taxes to cool down the economy

when the economy is suffering economic downturn, government will increase government expenditure, to build infrastructure (to increase employment) , it also will improve the standard living of people

****during 07/08 Global Financial Crisis, increase government spending does not have effective impact to the economy in some western countries, such as US, UK and European Union countries. This is because they all are very well-developed countries, infrastructures are very well-devoloped int their countries, thus government cannot further set up the infrastructure.

I can tell you that China buys a lot of US treasury bill to balance the trade deficit between them
(it's because China exports a lot of items to US, and US imports a lot of Chinese goods, so the deficit can be significant)

However, for Malaysia security bonds, I don't quite understand about its market
i studied Economics in Singapore, so often involve in China/US/EU/Japan?SG economies, seldom involve in the Malaysia economy, except 97/98 Asia Financial Crisis

however, I study East Asia economies
because East Asia economies is getting important in the world
after Global Financial Crisis 08/09, the economy growth in most of the East Asia economies bounced back to positive growth rate very quickly
China growth rate in 2008 was 8%, which some of the western developed countries suffer negative growth rate

Chinese economy is getting influential in the world
however, it faces lots of social prblem
When US was like China today (the industry/economy stage), its economies was 4 times bigger than China
Thus although China's economical growth rate is indeed impressive and exponential, it needs to work very hard to sustain its growth until it transform into a developed powerful economy

But here in M'sia,our standard of living is increasing too,do you think it helps in our conomic growth?

that's why US keeps pressuring China to appreciate its currency, it claims that it will improve trade deficits between them
but actually this is wrong,
during 1980s, Japan was like current China, it had superlative growth rate, trade deficit between Japan and US is huge
and US asked Japan to appreciate its currency, and Japan did so, appreciate 50% at once
so japanese goods became expensive, Japan export decrease, and it economy was in a very big downturn situation
That's why Japan now only got very low GDP growth rate, around 1-2% per year.
It economic growth is like a "L" shape , the growth deteriorated very quickly, and only got very low growth rate, very fluctuating.
another issue in Japan is aging population, old people are more than young people, the social burden of government is very high (pension etc)
yet the young people are the pillars of economic growth in a nation. Thus labor productivity is very low.
Some more, Japan is a very closed economy and culture, it is not so "open-mineded" to foreigners and immigrants. (Japan visa is hard to get )
Singapore is suffering aging population too, but Singapore "imports' lots of foreign talents.

Yes, as economic growth is getting higher (GDP higher), the country is getting richer and richer
purchasing power is increasing, and thus people is rich and they are able to purchase expensive goods/better items from oversea
import will increase, and people can enjoy the high-tech products etc, standard of living is increased.

However, a problem in Malaysia that I have noticed is, the value of our currency is getting weaker, compare to Singapore, S$3 can have a proper nice meal, but in Malaysia RM3 is hard to fill your tummy. After the currency conversion is almost the same, but we cannot convert to compare the value of a currency.

In western countries, the meal is very expensive too, but because the people there are very rich, they are able to afford, they have high standard of living
but in Malaysia, our country isn't very rich,

This thread seems quite interesting...
After read what you wrote, I never thought that US so bad and caused Japan had a downturn in its economy.
But why Japan trusts US in the first place? Don't they have their own economic experts to analyze the outcomes?
And since Japan's growth rate is only 1 or 2% per year and it's a well-developed country, if there is financial crisis happen again, it will absorb a lot of impacts from the crisis?

Japanese save a lot, they got lot of foreign reserve
(in fact most of the east asian countries save a lot, so they could react to the crisis quite well, for example China, India. Singapore etc and hence their economies could be bounced back very quickly after the crisis in 08/09)
so if hit by financial crisis again, they can react quite well and they are able to borrow from foreign countries to finance their deficit if the foreign reserve had been run out.

in 2010, China become second biggest economy in the world , which Japan used to be.
I read an article regarding that Japanese will not forget 2010, as their economies had been exceeded by China.
Besides, there are some conflicts between these two countries , for example fighting for the ownership of Senkaku Island, historical incidents (WWII)
meanwhile, Japan had changed for 4 Prime Minister, it also explain the weaknesses of Japanese economy as they need more capable leader to cope with the economy growth

However, most of the Japanese they respect and love their countries very much
they will obey to the policies of government (maybe of the tradition of 武士精神）
Japan is also a huge economy,because of the globalization, lot of countries' economic activities are integrated with Japan
if it is really collapsed, the Great Depression will be caused and the world would experience the Great Depression in 1929,1930

However, we have learnt from the past events
Great Depression will be caused if any of the huge economies is collapsed (US, EU, China, Japan)
in 08/09 , there were only Great Recession, China and other countries had borrowed lot of money to US to help her to escape from the crisis
Great Recession means that if one country economic activity is experience downturn, its neighborhoods will experience the downturn too. but not turn to be a world depression

Indeed, Chinese and Japanese have conflicts. That same goes to Korean and Japanese too.
In the end, did China takes the same decision as what Japan did before?
And what social problems that affect China's economy?

The last Prime Minister stepped down is due to he couldn't do anything to remove the US military warship from an island, right?
A lot of citizens from that particular island were quite angry at him.

yup, China and Japan already have lot of historical conflicts, now due to fighting for the energy resources, their conflicts have become more severe.
both Japan and China have demanded lot of energy resource, they try their best to build stable bilateral relationships with resource-rich countries, for instance like Ghana, in Oct 2010, China has loan to Ghana for billions to help to develop their oil industry.
This conflicts go to US and China too.
However, China and US are actually mutual-dependent to each other, that is US is the largest consumers of Chinese products, and China is the largest creditors to US, most of us believe these 2 huge and powerful countries will try their best to maintain their relationship.

China suffers some social problem, for instance the huge poverty gap, in the western coastal area, there are some major cities like Shanghai, Beijing etc, they are very rich as they have more natural resources and population, easier to develop industries.
However, in the eastern area, it's very under-developed, people are very poor and suffering from livelihood.

Besides, China's property price is rising exponentially, very expensive, the property price might burst in one day that might cause the crisis to China.
Inflation in China is very significant too.
Some rich Chinese act very differently from rich people in west countries.
For examples, Bill Gates has gathered millionaires in US to donate the money, he claimed that rich people are very lucky, their money are earned from the society, since they have so many money, why don't they donate back to the society and get some bless?
He said that since he cannot use so many money, he should stand up and inspire the rich to do the kind deed
Lots of millionaires or billionaires in US have been enlightened and agreed to cooperate with Bill Gates.
However, when Bill Gates tried to enlighten the rich people in China, not very much people are willing to support his ideas

Besides, I have read the Sin Chew Daily recently, it shocked me, just a simply sharing with you guys
There has a young man in the China, his had an accident with another people, he shouted loudly, "我的爸爸是XXX", which I forgot his father's name, but he meant that his father is very rich and powerful, he is not afraid of them =.=
The moral education in China has to be re-thought again....

Since she's no replying, let me give it a try (I'm not economics major tho, so, take my opinions with a pinch of salt yea) .

I don't really know deep enough regarding monetary or fiscal policy, but I would like to think that China's economy is going to be in deep trouble very soon.

China is trying to use strong and suppressive monetary policy to stabilize rising prices. This can be done by means of controlling interest rates, and the money supply.

As it stands now, RMB's lower valuation encourages foreign investments to China and also stipulates China's export industry. I guess as time goes by, U.S. will lead the objection to China's Yen valuation and force China to revalue the RMB. Stronger RMB probably does help Malaysia's export to China, given Ringgit remains the same value. On the other hand, higher RMB might cause the price of our china-imported-goods to rise. I hope the end-result is good for Malaysia though, as it might encourage more local production for export and also for local consumption.

lol, don't know if I've violated any fundamental economic theories in the above opinion or not.

school life so busy, can't take a breath hehe
now I am taking of the course of Macroeconomic Issues and Policies in Contemporary China

In this course, it mentions that China has started to revalue its china exchange rate, within 1-2%, quite appreciate a lot, I will update this issues these few days (provided I have enough time)

Btw, I am taking Astronomy too, any experts here? feeling so sienz as arts students need to take science courses in my school too, even if only 3 course, it really kills me as I really don't have much knowledge in Astronomy...

our economy actually started booming after indepence, however, now we are still in midst of developing country
in South East Asia, we are only after Singapore

so the politics does matter to our economy

Look at China
After the reform and open policy, China has been developing its economy
actually if one country wants to be developed country
it needs to start from simple industry
for instance like South Korea, it starts the fashion, toys, simple products first
after that export to develop countries
attract FDI (foreign direct investment), when you want to develop your country, u need money. however, since u are a poor economy and don't have much money, so u need to 'use" other countries' money by attracting them to set up factory in your country because of the cheap labor.
earned money, use the money to upgrade its economy, such as provide training to workers, or invest in education
and the society has been upgraded to manufacturing economy, and so as the economy situation now

China's labors are no longer cheap comparing to the past as the RMB has been appreciated
thus lot of factories they start to shift their factories to Indonesia, Vietnam etc
Malaysia's labor cannot be considered as cheap labor
yet our economy is not so well-developed

God I thought I'm very interested to Econs but after reading all the post in this thread, I doubt my interest :O
I'm still a foundation student, still wondering should I choose accounting or econs :/

China is only great in GDP but not GDP per capita. The GDP per capita is only like some of those Carribean and African countries. The big cities are like Europe and America but the kampungs are like Africa

It seems that Econ grad is hard to found a economic relevant job as the demand in market is not high
however, there are a lot of finance job
but, personally, I do not like finance :X

Hi, economic concerns about the welfare of a country(Macro) or a firm(Micro)
usually, from the standpoint of view of a firm, it cares more the profit-maximization, and thus accounting plays a very important role

If you like maths and calculation, I advise you to take accounting instead, as it is easier to find job in the market

Finance comprises a lot of component, like Forex (foreign exchange), shares, etc....

I took 1 finance subject which is Financial Economics, that one is more concerned about the shares, forward/spot contract, bond etc...
nt really interested in those financial tools as it's quite bored to me :X
and I do not want to work on financial area as it's quite competitive and stressful :X

i would like to know is it our country's economy going poor ? with the recently economic problems in western-countries , i do worry MY be affected so much . a few month ago when i was a student , my tuition teacher told me that it will be going to happen "金融风暴" , after every 3 years . should i trust him =_= ? altought i found him a litter bit radiculous ...

Hihi~ which school are you studying? I am studying Banking and Finance

My degree do involve some econ modules like Econ 101 and Macroeconomics to help us understand more about financial world.

I am still thinking whether want switch my major to Economics and Finance but something do bother me is compare to finance modules, Economics module involved more theory and curves and mathematics formula which is not that applicable when we look for job.

Yea, we can see that they are trying to maintain the relationship. However, recently, Snowden has leaked certain confidential information of NSA about the organization inventing a technology to monitor every movement of the people. Somehow, I don't know why but I feel the world has been controlled and manipulated by the power greedy people. I started to doubt whether the economic systems we practice are part of their game or not.

Regarding the rich people in China, yes, their education system has problems. Perhaps, most influential factors are from their families and peers. And maybe society perspectives. There were several videos about accidents in China went viral on Facebook. Many drivers just hit and run. My friend who had a trip to China told me that its citizens bash up each others on the public street especially couples. But we can't say that China is like that just because of those minority caused problems (if it's minority).

Today we are living in year 2013. I believe you have notice that many issues have been appeared in the past like between countries and within the countries. I also believe that these problems will lead us to another war if they have not been handled properly. Speculation of a time traveller (John Titor) will come true.

what system do you meant?
depends on how much you know about forex and stock,
forex - is a global market, when you trade you need to be familiar with the gov policy on the currency you trade

stock - this would be more easier to learn for beginner, to simplify, buying shares is like running a business, you own part the company. before investing you need to familiar the business sector and enviroment

both forex and stock required knowledge on macro and microeconomics
